Asthma is a chronic and incurable but treatable disease; however, proper diagnosis and prompt, timely, and controlled treatment are necessary. The main purpose is that people can carry out their activities in a normal way, said specialists from the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER) “Ismael Cosío Villegas”.

In the context of World Asthma Day, which is commemorated on the first Tuesday of May, INER specialists emphasize the need for those who suffer from this disease to be diagnosed on time. As an example, patients arrive at this institute for the first time in very advanced conditions of the disease, without timely treatment or with wrong medications.

Appearance of the first symptoms

Some symptoms begin in childhood, so timely diagnosis and follow-up is essential. Inadequate care can trigger a respiratory urgency and lead to even loss of life.

INER has an Asthma Clinic where, so far this year, 220 consultations per month have been provided.

Asthma is a complex disease of the airways, characterized by bronchial obstruction due to muscle contraction that causes airway inflammation with symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and often chest pain.

A particular feature of asthma is that the symptoms are generally accentuated at night, early morning, and early morning. It is also seasonal, so it can be exacerbated in winter or spring.

There is a certain genetic predisposition to develop it, in such a way that when the person attends a flu and is exposed to an agent such as pollen, perfume, the smell of cleaning products, it is likely that asthma genes are activated.

Asthma Treatments

People with this disease receive controller treatment to prevent airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. If necessary, rescue treatment is applied to control seizures, such as salbutamol.

People with asthma should not stop treatment, as it is a chronic disease. In addition, they must be immunized against COVID-19 and have a complete vaccination schedule.

At INER, patients receive comprehensive care in various specialties such as otorhinolaryngology, physiology, pulmonology, allergology and any other that they require, in case of suffering from another disease that could destabilize their control, such as allergic rhinitis or sleep apnea.

One type of asthma is allergic T2, which is associated with allergic rhinitis or dermatitis; It usually presents in childhood, especially in girls and boys who are seven years old on average, and affects between 60 and 70 percent of people with this disease.

Another type is non-allergic inflammation 2, which is related to exposure risks; although there are people who suffer from both types of asthma.
