Many of the things we take for granted in our society stand and fall with confidence. Trust we have in our fellow human beings, and in our institutions. If that trust disappears, we suddenly form a completely different kind of society.
Traditionally, the Netherlands has long been a so-called ‘high trust society’. The confidence of the Dutch in fellow citizens and institutions was generally high. As far as trust in institutions is concerned, that time now seems to be over. Research shows that in recent years the confidence that the Dutch have in our politics and government institutions has been systematically declining.
