IIn the summer of 2021, Robin Luth could no longer bear his own excuses. For weeks, the handball player had been telling his teammates at HSG Kastellaun Simmern that he would not be able to play next season. Too much stress. However, the then twenty-one-year-old remained silent about the real reason: a few months earlier he had admitted to himself that he was transgender. That although he was raised as a girl, he feels that he belongs to the male gender. At this point, Luth had already come out to his family and his best friend, and now he wanted to start hormone therapy.
Luth was convinced that this decision would cost him his sport. “I was sure I had to stop,” he recalls. Handball – like organized sport in general – is based on a two-pronged system; there are men’s and women’s teams. Luth could not imagine how he would fit into this system as a trans man.
