From the bright green rectangle to the darkness of a cell. This is the step that Sergio Contreras, known as “Koke”, is about to take again. The former Spanish striker of Olympique de Marseille (from 2004 to 2006) aged 40 has indeed received a six-year prison sentence in Malaga, as reported by ElDesmarque. He was accused of having played a key role in a drug trafficking network, more specifically marijuana, intended to be delivered by truck to several European countries. He has already spent a year and eight months behind bars before being released on bail in July 2021

This Tuesday, eighteen people, including Koke and his brother, were present at the hearing. All admitted the charges against them. The ex-footballer was facing a 16-year sentence at first instance and therefore saw this sentence reduced after acknowledging his major involvement in the network. The defendants who belonged to the organization received the same sentence. Those who were not part of the network took two years in prison.

The trial, which began on April 27, was later suspended after one of the defendants failed to appear. The latter was found guilty in absentia in order to continue the hearing.

Born and trained in Malaga, Koke was bought by OM for 700,000 euros in Malaga in 2004. In a season and a half on the Canebière, the Spaniard, who retired in 2016 and a last stint at the Aris Thessaloniki (Greece) played 32 Ligue 1 games and scored 6 goals.
