Nasal spray is often the helper in need when a stuffy nose is due to a cold or due to an allergy makes life difficult. That the sprays because of the danger to become addicted to it, should not be used for too long a period of time is now clear to most. But did you know that you’re almost certainly using the spray incorrectly?

Numerous videos are currently going viral on Tiktok, in which users explain how to use the spray correctly. And not by sticking the spray straight into your nose, spraying it and sniffing it up vigorously.

Instead, as the Tiktoker and doctor dr.foodallergy explains, you should bend your head slightly forward, insert the spray into your nose and then rotate it slightly outwards, i.e. in the direction of the paranasal cavity.

After spraying, you should not immediately pull your nose up sharply, because that way you swallow the liquid directly and it cannot work at all. It’s better if you take a few quick breaths in quick succession, like you’re sniffing like a dog. If the remaining liquid runs out of your nose after about five to ten seconds, blow your nose and that’s it.

Signs that you have used the spray incorrectly are sometimes that the product does not work as desired. Or your nose is easily irritated and you develop a tendency to nosebleeds. Another point: You taste the spray after spraying. Because that is a sign that the liquid did not get into the sinuses, where it should actually do its job, but landed directly in the throat.
