Puerto Baha de Algeciras, Marcotran and Traccion Rail join the Mercancas al Tren initiative

(03/05/2023)

Three years after the beginning of its journey in the Iberian Peninsula, “Mercandías al tren”, the campaign adds new partners. Puerto Bahía de Algeciras, Marcotran and Traccion Rail have joined this initiative in favor of a logistics chain that is respectful of the Planet.

All of them have highlighted that the railway is a sustainable and safe means of transport, which contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and gives the possibility of offering intermodal alternatives that help the operators’ clients to comply with their environmental policies. .

In the case of Algeciras, it is indicated that although last year a new record was reached in terms of TEUS moved by rail, 57,345 TEUs, this growth is limited by the conditions of the existing rail infrastructure to our Port and that connects with the peninsular interior. In this sense, it recalls that the common Central Branch of the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors, and therefore doubly prioritized for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), has sections without electrification, on a single track and with the need for sidings for convoys of 740 meters. For this reason, they request that the planned investments be carried out more quickly and recover the lost time that the environmental processing of the electrification of the Algeciras-Bobadilla has taken, if the Railway Highway with Zaragoza is to begin operating next year.

With these three new members, “Mercandías al tren” reinforces its support in its search to give the train a greater role and achieve a more environmentally friendly logistics chain. The objective of this initiative is to raise awareness among public institutions, as well as the business sector and society in general of the importance of transferring a significant part of freight transport to rail.

Stop in Algeciras

Regarding the next planned activities, the green container of this campaign will be in Algeciras on May 5 and 6 at the Central Access of the Port of Algeciras so that it can be visited both inside and outside, where it houses an exhibition that explains, with posters and audiovisual content, why it is essential to move cargo to the train to fight climate change.
