Technology is part of the daily life of millions of people in the world. From actions that have become commonplace, such as watching videos on the phone, to others of greater complexity. Today what seemed impossible before has become a reality and it is a trend that cannot be reversed. The most recent case that has generated strong controversy is that of the first babies that were conceived by a robot, but what really happened?

Evolution of technology applied to health

First, the use of tools such as the Artificial intelligence it has generated a new revolution although its true consequences are not yet known. It could even be a threat to the field of health because one of the main adversities seems to have been resolved.

A fundamental feature of the chatbots is its ability to answer questions automatically. The problem is their lack of empathy and the null possibility of offering humanitarian attention. Although as time has passed that has changed.

The latest model is ChatGPT and the study Comparing Physician and Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Responses to Patient Questions Posted to a Public Social Media Forum published by JAMA Internal Medicine showed that its answers are now so complete that they even exceed those of a human. Although that is not all, users say that they feel a more empathetic conversation than when having a conversation with a person.

First babies conceived by a robot

The topic of technology applied to the field of health has now taken a new historic step. For the first time the registered birth of some babies that were conceived by a robot. But now it’s time to analyze what happened step by step.

Assisted reproductive methods are not new because they have been around for decades. One of the best known options is the in vitro fertilization. It consists of the union of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm, although the entire process is carried out in a laboratory dish and with the support of an embryologist.

But now the next step to achieve conception is the sistema robótico ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). It is a creation that, as its name indicates, is in charge of applying the technique of intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

This option is ideal for couples who have infertility problems or difficulties getting pregnant. Before, an embryologist manually injected a sperm into the oocyte. To do so, personnel with extensive experience are required because millimeter precision is required.

With this in mind, the Spanish company Overture Life was commissioned to design a robot that can do all of the above. Now the machinery makes the injection and does not require the assistance of a human because it is programmed to fulfill its function.

To demonstrate its correct functioning, it was put to the test and after nine months the first babies conceived by a robot were born. So far they are reported to be in good health and it could be the start of a new revolution. At the same time, the concern is whether this new technique can completely replace embryologists.
