Germany: the office of a deputy of Senegalese origin burned down
BERLIN, May 4, 2023 – The office of the German deputy of Senegalese origin Karamba Diaby was set on fire in Halle, in eastern Germany, announced Thursday this social-democrat parliamentarian, already targeted by death threats and shots against his permanence.
” Fortunately, no one got hurt. This act makes me angry, ”tweeted the SPD deputy from Halle (Saxony-Anhalt), lamenting that his office is “unusable for an indefinite period”.
A suspect, detained at the scene by witnesses, alerted by flames on the facade of the building, was arrested. He was remanded in custody by a judge. According to Mr. Diaby, the suspect had already hurled racial slurs at him.
“I am horrified that a new cowardly attack has been perpetrated against the constituency office of my colleague in the Bundestag”, the lower house of the German Parliament, reacted the co-president of the Social Democratic Party, Saskia Esken.
Aged 61, Mr. Diaby, born in Senegal and who obtained German nationality in 2001, had been the target in 2020 of death threats.
Germany’s first black deputy elected in a constituency in the former GDR, a region where the far right thrives, Mr. Diaby had also received the support of most German parties after the discovery the same year of impacts of bullets on his permanence.
Death threats, physical or verbal attacks: concern is mounting in Germany in the face of the multiplication of violence against elected officials, in a context of a stiffening of the political climate under pressure from the far right.
The murder in June 2019 by a neo-Nazi activist of Walter Lübcke, an elected member of the conservative party who defended the policy of welcoming migrants from former Chancellor Angela Merkel, had caused an electric shock in Germany.
In April 2022, four members of a far-right network in the antivax movement and opponents of the rules enacted against the Covid, who planned the kidnappings of elected officials, were arrested.
