In a new edition of Could be worse, we contacted the lawyer and former prosecutor, Carlos Gajardo, to talk about the scope of the controversy that arose with the candidate for the Arica and Parinacota region, Karla Añes, who was convicted of drug trafficking years ago.

“A political party has to scrutinize the candidates it presents to the public. We are talking about situations that are relatively public, the conviction that a person has for a crime of this serious type, are on the pages, therefore it is one of the minimum controls that one should request, ”he declared.

All the details in the complete interview with Julio César Rodríguez on Bio Bio TV.

“There is a more serious issue here that has to do with the responsibility of the system as a whole, specifically the Servel, and I think that this has to be clarified. He has to give better explanations and probably make a summary to investigate what happened, ”she said.

And he added: “It is important to investigate what happened. There is a system where people can clear their records in some situations but that is more complex when there is a second conviction.”

“What is clear is that for a person to have the possibility of being a candidate, they have to be a citizen in the terms of the constitution and this removes this possibility from those who have been convicted of serious crimes and in article 17 it speaks of crimes terrorists and for drug trafficking”, he added.

And he insisted: “The constitution puts itself in this situation and says that these people can only be rehabilitated by a decision of the Senate, which has not happened here. Here a serious mistake was made in having allowed this person to be a candidate.
