“It’s very emotional, none of us have lived through a coronation,” Karen Chamberlain, 57, a charity worker who traveled with her family from Birmingham, in central England, told AFP.

“Our mother came to London in 1953” for Elizabeth II’s coronation, he explained. “We hope we’re still here when William becomes king,” she added, referring to the 40-year-old heir to the throne, as she prepared to watch the royal couple’s procession through the mall.

The new king, 74, and queen, 75, will parade down the grand avenue in the city center in a modern carriage from Buckingham Palace to nearby Westminster Abbey, an important landmark in the history of the British monarchy.

Around 2,300 personalities were invited to the act, including international figures and leaders such as the American First Lady Jill Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or Kings Felipe VI and Letizia of Spain, in addition to hundreds of British civil representatives.

Before their eyes, and before millions of viewers, they will be enshrined at the top of the British monarchy, eight months after ascending the throne following the death of Elizabeth II, who reigned for seven decades.
