In a decade-long study, it was found that only 4% of the patients who underwent the surgery experienced obesity caused by cancer. In comparison, 8.9% of those who did not have the surgery were diagnosed with cancer-related obesity.

The study looked at the medical records of 55,700 obese patients who had the surgery and compared them to the same number of patients who did not. The surgeries were varied, including gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass surgery and gastric stricture surgery. Among those who had surgery, 2,206 experienced cancer-related obesity, while 4,960 of the group who did not have surgery developed these symptoms.
