Microsoft is working with AMD to develop artificial intelligence processors, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

The companies have teamed up to compete with GPU maker Nvidia, which dominates the AI-enabled chip market. At the same time, Microsoft will continue to work with Nvidia to have more AI processors at its disposal and meet the growing demand for neural networks.

Agency sources added that Microsoft will support AMD with engineering resources. Microsoft’s own processor was codenamed Athena.

Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw denied AMD’s involvement with Athena: “AMD is a great partner, but they are not affiliated with Athena.” AMD representatives declined to comment.

Several hundred Microsoft employees are working on the new AI-enabled processor. The company has invested about $2 billion in development.

After the news about the partnership between Microsoft and AMD, the shares of the first rose by 1% to $305.4 per share, the second – by 6.11% to $86.6. Nvidia shares fell 1.9%.
