Vilmos Fischl emphasized that the Pope’s visit to Hungary was also important for the ecumenical church, since the Catholic Church influences their way of thinking; when the Pope publishes an encyclical, it is also interpreted by their theologians; moreover, they all belong to the people of Christ.

According to him, refugees, the disadvantaged, those in socially difficult situations and young people are close to the Holy Father. Among the recent meetings, he singled out the program organized with young Christians in the Papp László Budapest Sports Arena, where he was received by a huge crowd. Vilmos Fischl said that this also gave strength to Pope Francis, since he “saw that the church lives in Hungary too”.

The general secretary of the MEÖT said that in Budapest we saw a physically tired person, who at the same time had immeasurable inner strength, constantly fought against his pain, and was in a wheelchair much less than a year before.

He noted that the Pope is direct, but at the same time he can be tough. He said that during the papal visit to Kazakhstan last year, he was a witness when the Holy Father spoke very strongly against the war, saying what he thought “hardly”.

Vilmos Fischl also recalled another personal memory: during the International Eucharistic Congress organized in Budapest in 2021, he spent 45 minutes with the Holy Father as a member of a 16-person delegation from the ecumenical council, and MEÖT president József Steinbach, who led the delegation, – after his welcoming speech – the Pope ignoring protocol, she hugged him.
