It has been a exponential growth of electric mobility in Spain, although it still does not take off. According to AEDIVE, in the last year there were 100,425 registrationsa third of the electricity park, which totals 315,622 vehicles and is very far from the goal of five million electric vehicles circulating in Spain in 2030. There are many voices that identify as one of the main barriers the lack of public charging infrastructure. However, the results of the AEDIVE Electric Mobility Yearbook 2022-2023, based on an objective analysis of the current infrastructure and its use, reveal other keys to take into account.

During 2022, records were broken in the installation of public charging points: in fact, 54% of all public IRVEs were installed in that year alone. However, some 7,400 could not start up because they were pending connection to the networklimiting to 21,573 operating public charging pointsvery far from the goal of 250,000 in 2030. The regulatory change by the Government introducing the responsible declaration to facilitate the installation of these charging points is a great step, but it is urgent to identify the rest of the barriers and overcome them.

But these points are not used either, since the average stands at 4.2%; something very worrying if we consider that this infrastructure, underused, receives public funds.

Lack of interoperability increases recharge costs. Similarly, the lack of interoperability between charging points, which does not happen in other European countries, is causing the public charging cost is one of the most expensive in Europe, which discourages its use. For this reason, the owner of an electric vehicle does not have information on the price of recharging or on availability in real time and is conditional on payment through apps or cards. These peculiarities limit access and contradict the characteristics of a public service financed with public funds. Hence, it is key to improve the user experience and link the subsidies to develop a real interoperability of the infrastructure, in addition to ensuring its maintenance and availability in order to achieve the objectives.

Therefore, it is time to optimize and improve public charging, guaranteeing the user an experience not only the same as traditional refueling, but even superior, by being able to take advantage of the technological advances of the charging point and the electric vehicle. And all this at an adjusted price to guarantee, in short, that the user is at the center, instead of the service provider.
