This 2nd stage of the Giro was to be a matter of sprinters, but some of the best specialists in the genre were unable to take part in the home straight on Sunday. 3.8 km from the finish in San Salvo, Max Kanter (Movistar) and Martijn Tusveld (Team DSM) collided on the right of the peloton, creating a collective fall. This, in which Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Mark Cavendish (Astana) were notably entangled, greatly disrupted the end of the stage… and prevented these riders from getting involved in the final sprint.

The peloton has, in fact, been split in two, with around fifty men in the lead, in a position to fight for the stage victory. In this game, Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) crossed the line first, ahead of David Dekker (Arkéa Samsic) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck). The young Italian (22) won the very first stage of his career on a grand tour.

The leader, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), author of a number on the inaugural time on Saturday, kept away from this fall and maintained his lead overall. His main competitor for the final victory, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), still points to 43 seconds, but won a place (5th). He took advantage of the setbacks of Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers), winner of the 2019 edition and slowed down by the fall. The Briton now occupies 8th place.
