In India, a tragedy bereaved the southern state of Kerala on Sunday. Scores of people died when a boat carrying tourists capsized, authorities told local media.
Twenty dead have so far been recorded, according to the daily Times of India as well as the PTI press agency. The daily Indian Express number 18. The incident occurred in Tanur, a coastal town in Malappuram district. Rescue operations are underway.
Prime Minister promises compensation
“Saddened by the loss of life following the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. (All my) condolences to the bereaved families,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, promising compensation to the next of kin of each victim. Survivors testified to the local press, observing that many passengers were not wearing life jackets. The reason for the vessel’s capsizing remains unknown at this time.
Most of the victims are children during school holidays, said V. Abdurahiman, Kerala state sports minister who is coordinating the rescue efforts. More than 30 people were on the boat when the incident happened. Four people in critical condition were taken to hospital, the minister told PTI.
