Dhe major French bank BNP Paribas has around 500 vacancies in Germany and sees the shortage of suitable employees worsening. In the meantime, this also affects non-customer areas. The number of active applicants is declining. The bank counteracts this with offers such as home office options. Tino Benker-Schwuchow, member of the Group Management Board of BNP in Germany and responsible for human resources, no longer wants to speak only of a “war for talent”. In an interview with the financial news agency Bloomberg, he speaks of a “War for Hands”.

After it had already been difficult in recent years to find people for particularly specialized positions, for example in compliance, this has now also extended to normal areas such as accounting or human resources management. “Here, too, we increasingly see a lack of qualified colleagues. This is not least due to the demographic change,” says Benker-Schwuchow. He therefore speaks of a labor market. Vacancies per applicant would increase. The number of active applicants, for example, fell by half between the third quarter of 2021 and the third quarter of 2022.

Although jobs are being cut in the industry as a whole, other institutes are also having problems filling certain positions. The number of jobs publicly advertised by banks and fintechs in Germany amounted to 36,973 in the first three months of this year alone, according to data from the Berlin-based personnel service provider Index Group.

3000 euros bonus

When filling vacancies, Benker-Schwuchow relies not only on job exchanges, but also on headhunters and recruiting events. And if employees successfully place a new colleague, the bank pays a bonus of 3,000 euros for permanent positions. At the same time, BNP Paribas tries to create attractive working conditions. Employees in Germany are allowed to work up to 60 percent from home. “Home office will remain. This is not a short-term trend,” said Sofia Merlo, head of group human resources at BNP Paribas, in the joint Bloomberg interview with Benker-Schwuchow.

With this in mind, BNP has introduced desk sharing in most of its larger and newer locations. According to Merlo, there are an average of 66 desks for 100 employees. That also applies to Germany. Smaller offices are also to be gradually redesigned.

Unlike its competitors, BNP currently does not allow workation, i.e. temporary work from abroad. This is exactly what institutions such as LBBW, DZ Bank and BayernLB are now offering, also to make themselves more attractive as employers. “Unfortunately, there are still too many hurdles and risks, for example with regard to taxes, data protection and health insurance,” Merlo explained the reluctance of her house.

According to its own information, BNP Paribas fills approximately 25,000 permanent positions worldwide each year. According to Benker-Schwuchow, the 500 open positions in Germany currently relate to the areas of Audit, Risk & Compliance, Finance, Client Relationship Management and IT.
