Starting April 2023, Yandex introduces restrictions on the use of the Yandex ID password in third-party mail applications, calendars, and Disk clients. The company announced this as part of a customer mailing list.

According to the company, this solution is aimed at improving the security of user accounts. Using different passwords is less likely to hack your account.

“On May 5, 2023, we close the ability to use the Yandex ID account password in third-party mail applications, calendars, and YandexDisk clients that connect via POP3 / IMAP / SMTP / WebDAV / CalDAV protocols,” such a message came to one from Yandex users.

The POP3, IMAP, and SMTP protocols are used for email. With their help, you can connect Yandex mail to a third-party application, such as Outlook or Thunderbird. The WebDAV protocol is needed to access the cloud storage, and CalDAV is needed to access the calendar.

To continue using third-party clients, you need to create a separate password for each such application in the Yandex ID settings. At the same time, it should not be repeated with the password from the account itself in Yandex.

The press service of “Yandex” told “Vedomosti” that the new restrictions are being introduced in order “to increase the security of accounts and avoid any compromising actions by third-party services that could threaten our users and their personal data.”

“The use of a password from Yandex for authorization on other services is being closed gradually. This process began in early April and will last for several months until such authorization is closed for everyone. At each stage, it is disabled for several tens of thousands of users,” Yandex stressed.

The company said that it warns users of all changes and sends detailed instructions on how to proceed.
