Protests in Sudan against military power: security forces throw tear gas at protesters – Video

by time news

Sudanese security forces fired tear gas and fired into the air today in Khartoum for disperse protesters who had gathered around the presidential palace during a demonstration against military power in which hundreds of thousands of people participated. Several demonstrators were injured, according to witnesses to the AFP agency.

The demonstration was organized on the third anniversary of the start of similar rallies which in 2019 led to the deposition of the strongman of Sudan Omar al Bashir, paving the way for a system of power shared by military and civilians. Many demonstrators, as they approached the gates of the presidential palace, have chanting slogans against General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, which led a military coup on 25 October.

In the evening, protesters said they would start a sit-in similar to the one that led to Bashir’s fall two years ago, and it was at this point that security forces fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. The generals who carried out the coup initially placed the country’s civil leader, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, under house arrest. But they later released him and put him back in office on November 21st. But many of his supporters have turned their backs on him, accusing him of providing a semblance of legality to effective military power.
