Survival rates for esophageal and gastric cancer have improved in recent decades. However, not every patient benefits from this. Dutch researchers analyzed the figures in 3 studies.

Centralization, improved diagnostics, new techniques and treatment methods have improved the survival of patients with esophageal or gastric cancer in recent years. For example, of all patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer between 2000 and 2010, 15% were still alive after 5 years, a decade later that percentage was 24%.

This increase is good news in itself, but the generic numbers present obstacles in clinical practice. For example, patients are now sometimes told on systemic therapy that survival can be anywhere from 3 months to 2 years. The researchers therefore wanted to map, based on real-world data, how many patients benefit from the rising survival rates.

Researchers Steven Kuijper (Amsterdam UMC) and Marieke Pape (IKNL) and colleagues published their findings in 3 studies, drawing on data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NKR). 2 studies are about survival in the curables in palliative setup. A third study brings the conditional survival map.
