Several universities joined forces and investigated which diet has the most negative influence on our life expectancy. The results are quite shocking.

Extensive investigation

Of universities collected data of nearly 400,000 Americans between the ages of 50 and 71. Using an extensive survey, they tried to find a link between diet and longevity. The participants had to indicate, among other things, how often they ate 124 different types of food. In this way, the researchers could find out how much fat and carbohydrates they consumed.

Risks of a high-fat diet

First, the researchers found that people who followed a low-fat diet had a significantly lower risk of premature death, compared to participants who followed a high-fat diet. The risk of dying (for any reason) dropped by 21% in people following a low-fat diet.

Bottom Line: A high-fat diet may increase your risk of early death. Limiting your fat intake can have many health benefits. For example, it can improve your cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. If you do use fat, it’s important to choose healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, seeds, avocado and oily fish.

How (un)healthy is the keto diet?

On the other hand, a low-carbohydrate life is not such a good idea according to this study. With the keto diet you eat extremely little to no carbohydrates. Participants who followed such a keto diet were 28% more likely to die (from any cause) compared to peers who did eat or more carbohydrates. The figures are quite shocking, because those who followed a low-carbohydrate diet even increased their mortality risk by 38% (!).

It is important to know that not all carbohydrates are created equal. Some healthy carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, are an important part of a balanced diet. Eliminating all carbohydrates from your diet, as is the intention with a keto diet, is therefore not very healthy.

Dietitian Wendy explains exactly what carbohydrates mean for the figure:
