Large scaled research
Since 2021, biopsies have been taken via the skin (perineal biopsies) in all Anser prostate centers instead of via the intestine. In the past year, research has been conducted within the Anser prostate centers into this method of biopsy. More than 1,500 patients shared their experiences after a prostate biopsy.

The figures show that the new method of biopsy is the right choice for many patients. For example, with the old technique it was customary to give all patients (100%) antibiotics because of the high risk of infections after the biopsy. With the new technique, this is only 20% of patients. Despite the fact that antibiotics are not given as standard, there are far fewer infections that develop after taking the biopsy than with the old way of biopsy.

Together against antibiotic insensitivity
Taking perineal biopsies takes a little longer than the old method. But it saves unnecessary antibiotic use. This is important because bacteria can become insensitive (resistant) to antibiotics due to the extensive use of antibiotics. The antibiotics cannot kill or slow down the bacteria. Antibiotics then no longer work. This resistance makes infections more difficult to treat. By prescribing far fewer antibiotics, the Anser prostate centers help to inhibit this antibiotic resistance. Of course, there are always patients who do need antibiotics to perform the biopsy safely, for example in patients with artificial heart valves. In the Anser network, the antibiotic policy for biopsy has been recorded.
