With the new federal law number 14,534, the CPF will become the only identification number for Brazilian citizens for all relations between the individual and the State. This means that public bodies, including Brazilian consulates and embassies in other countries, will no longer be able to request documents other than the CPF to provide any type of service. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consulates are already preparing for the new reality and the CPF is already being included in the birth certificates of children of Brazilians who were born and registered abroad. Starting next year, all services provided at consulates, such as requests for passports and certificates and birth certificates, must contain the CPF number.
The Itamaraty advises that even those who have no plans to return to Brazil should obtain the CPF, if they do not have it, or consult their registration status with the Federal Revenue to verify that there is no pending issue, through this link. The agency points out that children of Brazilians who were born and registered abroad, but who do not have a CPF, should seek a consulate.
