British army colonel, military analyst Hamish Stephen de Bretton-Gordon (Hamish Stephen de Bretton-Gordon) previously commanded the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response forces of NATO and Great Britain.

In an interview with RFE/RL’s Georgian service, De Bretton-Gordon spoke about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats “backfire.” He also noted that Russia’s “decline in importance” is inevitable after the end of the Ukrainian war.

De Bretton-Gordon said in an interview: “Frankly, I don’t know what the “victory of Russia” will look like. Putin explained the “special military operation” he launched in February of last year with the intention of preventing the expansion of NATO, NATO’s eastward advance, and the return of Ukraine to Russia. If Putin is still trying to achieve this, then he has no chance of winning. All the steps he took to prevent NATO expansion had the opposite effect. If we look only two weeks ago, we will see that Finland, which has the most powerful army in Europe, joined NATO… and mobilized NATO to support Ukraine.

…Putin’s army has been destroyed, and it will take years to rebuild. It is said that he lost 2 thousand tanks. A true casualty figure is hard to come by. The British government and I believe the US government say over 220,000 dead or wounded. This is a very large number.

Some commentators think that maybe the Ukrainians will go behind the negotiating table and negotiate about Crimea. I don’t think so at all. In my opinion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has very clearly stated what victory is for him – Russia should withdraw its troops to the borders by 2014. Therefore, I think that Putin and his generals hope in vain that they will win some kind of victory.”
