The course of life **

by Frederic Sojcher

French film, 1h30

Can we tell lives without talking about our own? Noémie doesn’t believe it. Screenwriter in sight for thirty years, she accepted the invitation of Vincent, the director of the Toulouse film school. During a day of master class, she explains, intimidated but strong of her filmography, her job and her career to the screenwriters of tomorrow, under the eyepiece of a camera.

She immediately delivers the key to creation: from the observation of others and of oneself, a question opens the imagination, “What if…? » It’s up to everyone to find stories that will allow them to deepen their personal issues without revealing themselves. Asked by the students about hers, Noémie modestly evokes the fear of abandonment which has sometimes prompted her to flee from happiness for fear that it will run away.

From essay to fiction

Belgian director Frédéric Sojcher, who is also a publisher, has published with Éditions Hémisphères Writing workshop by Alain Layrac with the subtitle Fifty tips for a successful screenplay without missing out on your life. From this book, they drew together the scenario of the course of life, transposition of essay to fiction. At the conference, fascinating and on which the realization multiplies the points of view, the relationship of Noémie and Vincent, once very in love, is mixed. Where are they now in existence? What remains of their history? How did she forge the woman and the man they have become? On these questions, an intense and undeniably fresh film is woven, with the unity of time and place so dear to tragedy.

The duo formed by Agnès Jaoui and Jonathan Zaccaï proves to be very convincing, with an obviousness and an immediate depth from which their story easily emerges. The screenwriters nevertheless made the mistake of not trusting enough the interest aroused by the ghost of their love and the master class. They add other snippets of life, the poignant one of Vincent’s sister-in-law (Géraldine Nakache), his right arm in the establishment, and the weaker and even annoying one of a couple of students. Yet the charm operates in this ode to cinema, with the elegant architecture of the National School of Audiovisual in Toulouse, the charming streets of the Pink City and the bewitching music of Vladimir Cosma as its backdrop.
