The Spanish Government approved yesterday 7 tourism sustainability projects that will mobilize 18.4 million euros of European funds in the regions of Girona. They are part of a package of 175 interventions throughout Spain that are added to those previously approved (five in December 2022 and three in December 2021).

These are the Girona projects that have benefited from European aid:

  • City Council of Begur. Smart Tourism Mobility (3 million euros)

  • City Council of Cadaqués. The sustainable pearl of the Mediterranean (2.7 million euros)

  • Palafrugell City Council. Lever for improving the tourist model (2 million euros)

  • City Hall of Palamós. Promotion of sustainable tourism, territorial cohesion and eco-mobility on the coast (3 million euros)

  • City Council of l’Escala. L’Escala, Mar d’Empúries (2.5 million euros)

  • Castelló d’Empúries City Council. Two souls of culture, nature and sport (2 million euros)

In yesterday’s meeting, in addition to these 17 territorial plans, close to 3.2 million euros allocated to the Provincial Council of Girona, for the “Riunatur” project, which aims to promote deconcentration and sustainable tourist dynamism in indoor bathing spaces in Girona’s counties.

Last call

This is the last of the three calls that have been part of the Extraordinary Program of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destinations to manage Next Generation European funds. In total, Catalonia will have managed 55 plans and more than 206 million euros.

Across Spain, 478 million euros of additional European funds were approved yesterday, adding to the 660 million allocated for 2021 and the 720 million from last year’s edition. In total, there are already 1,858 million planned for projects that prioritize environmental sustainability and digitization with the aim of achieving more competitive and higher quality tourism.

In the meeting, the minister Hector Gomez he assured that “these projects increase their capacity to hold the territory together”. He also recalled that the forecasts for 2023 are very positive, after the record numbers achieved in the past Holy Week and May Bridge. He pointed out that the summer season will complete the recovery of tourism, reaching new record figures in tourists and spending.

“This year the priority of the National Tourist Plan will be the Sun and Beach and Turisme Blau destinations, which represents a recognition of the pioneering destinations and an impetus for their modernization”, the ministry pointed out in a statement.

Likewise, during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2023, “the tourism agenda will be one of our priorities”, said Héctor Gómez.
