The Bank of Spain is clear on this: it is not an exceptional situation and it happens more regularly than it should. And it is that detecting an unauthorized payment in your own bank account, an improper operation or an unknown movement is not a dish of good taste for anyone. And even more taking into account that it fully affects our savings and can create a significant hole for us. And, as if that were not enough, with the eternal threat of cybercriminals always present… What to do in these cases?

Recommendations of the Bank of Spain

The Bank of Spain has offered a series of recommendations and advice on its blog so that the owners of a bank account know how to act in the event of any atypical movement. For this, the regulatory body considers it a priority to communicate it to the bank, which is the one that “must demonstrate to you that the operation was authenticated, accurately registered and accounted for, and that it was not affected by a technical failure or any other problem.”

For this reason, it is advisable to complain to the entity’s Customer Service Department (SAC). “You must be provided with the documentation that proves the correct authorization of the payment or the execution of the operation carried out with the card,” they explain.

Pay attention to provisional payments

Likewise, the Bank of Spain also emphasizes the importance of taking into account the provisional nature of a possible return from the bank itself. “If during the processing of the claim the entity makes an interim credit for the amount you claim, it must also inform you, previously, that this credit is provisional: the amount of the purchase could be charged again once all the checks have been carried out in the if it were correct.”

The regulatory body ends its recommendations by recalling that “if the entity verifies that the operation was authenticated correctly and provides the documentation that accredits it, it must charge your account as soon as possible.”
