Vaginismus is a female sexual dysfunction linked to a phobia of penetration. It is characterized by a reflex and involuntary contraction of the muscles around the vagina at the approach of a “outer elementwhether it is a tampon, a speculum, a dilator, a finger or a male penis. Imaginary or anticipated penetration may be enough to trigger it.
Between 2% and 5% of women suffer from this disorder. This does not prevent them from having a sexual life and pleasure, but vaginal penetration is impossible, under penalty of triggering intolerable pain.
