Nearly 300 students affected by poor road conditions, who leave the communities of Pungalá for other towns, such as Licto or Riobamba, every morning that they go to class do not know what “adventure” awaits them, because it is common for them to run into a landslide, then, perhaps the force of the water from the ravines has broken ‘well-made’ structures or there are water lagoons due to the rain, perhaps all together in the same path.

Situation. Impact on a road; They complain about the failures! And a road in good condition to the communities of Pungalá was offered by the outgoing mayor, Napoleón Cadena, with the arrival of the ‘Maguazo-Alao project’, the same one that never finished. Walter Velasteguí, a community member and president of the ‘San Miguel de Pungalá’ Transportation Cooperative, said that this stretch of road, created more than 85 years ago, was narrow before and did not have the problems of today.

Reality. And yes, it is a problem, in all this section landslides -on a small scale- are recurrent; To access the Maguazo River catchment they widened the road, but the road is not even ballasted, it has hundreds of holes and when it rains lakes of water become deep and wide lagoons.

Actions. Velasteguí said that, along with other presidents of the communities, they have brought dump trucks with material to avoid the water lagoons. Throughout the journey there is no road infrastructure, and the one they have built consists of curbs and gutters, and in several sections the gutters are full of weeds or blocked, and they question whether this is the correct way to ‘do the job’ …
