Léa Mendonça witnessed her cure from cancer during a women’s congress held in Águas de Lindóia (SP) and said about how she faced fear and uncertainties: “The disease only brought me closer to God”.

The singer is one of best known female figures of gospel music aimed at the Pentecostal audience, and when the news of her cancer diagnosis came, in October 2021, feelings of fear and impotence presented themselves to her:

“I found out that I had a 5 cm tumor, I had to remove part of my intestine and I was submitted to a chemotherapy treatment for 4 months. I lived through very difficult moments”, she said in an interview given during the event held by the Central Baptist Church in Santo André.

“I never thought about death or the end of my career, but I got a little tense because the word ‘cancer’ scares anyone, even if I trust God a lot. […] Deep down you don’t know if it’s time to leave or if God will give you more time to live”, added the singer.

“Death is precious to God, but to us it is frightening. Even so, I kept my peace and tranquility, I didn’t get desperate. I only asked for the grace of God to give me strength”, he reiterated.

Chemotherapy was not an easy period for her, as she suffered from adverse reactions. One of the doctors who assisted her was a Christian, and during a conversation, he tried to cheer her up: “He said: Let’s stop crying! The doctor remembered that I stopped people’s pain with my songs. It was as if he said that I am very strong and I cannot cry”, said Léa to the portal. guide me.

“I know this is not true. There is no super man or wonder woman in the presence of God. We are all dependent and in need of His mercy. We are strengthened in our weakness by the strength of the Lord. I said to the doctor: ‘Oh, doctor, let me cry’. When I got out of the hospital and got back home, the first thing I did was turn those words into a song.”

“I am a child of God, I can cry too. Weeping may last for a night, but joy comes at dawn. Everything will be fine […] We cannot be afraid to show our fragility. […] Our strength comes from the Lord and the lived experiences need to serve as levers for other people’s faith”, he said. “Each one reacts in a different way to suffering, I make music”.

At the end of the interview, he declared that he will now dedicate himself to announcing the blessings received: “Until August 2022, my life revolved around the cure of this disease. When I took the tests back to the doctor he said there were no more cancer cells in my body. I’m sure the God I serve has already healed me. I am aware and certain of my victory”.
