The prices they continue the upward trend and have risen four tenths this April a Girona. Inflation continues to be felt especially in the day-to-day basket, because while food has fallen slightly year-on-year, filling the fridge now costs 12.9% more compared to April of 2022. This April, the products and services that climbed the most, however, were on the one hand the rubber and the footwear; and on the other, everything linked to the tourism (travel and accommodation). This, in turn, causes the interannual CPI to climb slightly to 3,9%. On the contrary, however, the prices of electricity, gas and fuel fell by 6.3% in April, a drop that, compared to a year ago, is over 24%.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) continues to rise and closes April with an increase similar to that of March. According to the data periodically made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), prices in Girona’s counties have risen by four tenths during the last month (+0.4%).

As is usual, behind this average two realities are hidden. On the one hand, those products and services that become more expensive. And on the other hand, those others that fall – in this case, especially basic services and fuels – and that, in turn, help to dampen the rise of others.

The increase in prices in April can be explained, above all, by the rise registered by both clothing and footwear. During this month alone, they have become more expensive by 7.9%. Going shopping and renewing the wardrobe season, compared to last year, now costs 1.6% more.

In parallel, inflation also continues to be felt in the day-to-day basket. Although food has moderated the increase (in March they rose in price by 1.1%), this April also closes with price increases. Specifically, of 0.6%. Fill the fridge now it costs 12.9% more than a year ago.

The difference, although it is not as pronounced as last month – in which the year-on-year increase reached 14.5% – does show that the reduction in VAT on certain products (such as bread, flour or milk) has fallen short to alleviate inflation. And that if the drought persists, food prices may increase; especially in the case of fresh products.

Tourism and clothing

He food has risen during April. But what has become more expensive – also, due to the arrival of Easter – have been the services linked to tourism. On the one hand, hotel and accommodation prices have climbed by 12.9%; travel and tourist packages, in turn, have done so by 6.6%, and restaurants and hospitality, by 0.6%.

At the same time, clothing and footwear have also gone up. Anyone who went shopping to renew their wardrobe this April will have paid 7.9% more than in March.

Leisure and culture (+1.1%), transport (+1.1%) and the price of rentals (+0.4%) and vehicles (+0.5%) also rose. Now, in the regions of Girona, renting a flat costs 4.3% more than last year, and buying a car, on the other hand, 8.5% more.

24% less

The counterpoint to these moose is, above all, the pack made up of basic services (light and gas) and the fuels. Because they all end April with a new drop in prices, reaching 6.3%. Among others, as a result of the reduction in electricity and the measures taken to mitigate the increase in prices (such as the so-called ‘Iberian exception’).

If, instead of looking at the month of April, you go back a year, electricity, gas and fuels are now 24.5% cheaper than a year ago. At the same time, during this March, personal care products (-1.8%), telephone and fax equipment (-0.8%) and audiovisual and information processing ( -2.9%).

Year-on-year, at 3.9%

When the balance is tipped, this time the price increases weigh more and this causes the interannual CPI to climb again. After moderating by more than two points in March (going from 5.8% to 3.1%), this index now closes April slightly higher, standing at 3.9%

Inflation continues to be evident, because all these increases are accumulated to the historical records that had been reached – the data from the INE go back to January 1993 – when the interannual CPI had come to catapult above 11%.
