NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover took this close-up view of a uniquely shaped rock nicknamed “Terra Firme,” It looks like an open book with pages blowing in the wind.
The image was taken on April 15, 2023, the 3,800 Martian day, or sol, of the mission, using the instrument Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) at the end of his robotic arm. The rock measures approximately 2.5 centimeters, reports the mission on his blog.
Unusually shaped rocks are common on Mars and were often formed by water seeping through cracks in a rock in the ancient past, bringing with it harder minerals. After eons of being blown away by the wind, the softer rock is excavated and the harder materials are all that remains.
El rover Curiosity arrived on Mars in the summer of 2012 and has been exploring Gale Crater and Mount Sharp at its center ever since. searching for signs of life in the Martian soil.
