The case came to light when police discovered that McLean was blackmailing and attempting to extort two brothers from Stoke-in-Trent. Using several telephones, he demanded 340,000 euros to release one of the brothers. When the police are finally able to intercept McLean, he tries to smash another phone to destroy evidence, but moments later they discover his victim in the cargo hold.

McLean has now been sentenced to 10 years in prison in this case and another 5 years in prison for other offences.
