End of the 1980s. Leaving Brussels in the morning, a Peugeot 605 carves the holiday route towards Saint-Raphaël (Var), where the family is going to spend the beginning of the summer. To enhance this long trip, the father spends « compils » music on the car radio. In the back seat, three sisters are vying for the center seat, but every time she hears “classic”the youngest has the impression that “everything stops” and internally exclaim “Wow! » when a voice – Maria Callas – emerges from an unknown piece.

The scene could take place in a film by Bertrand Tavernier or Claude Chabrol. It actually appears in the credits of the life of Albane Carrère, which would have been filmed in super-8. Thirty years later, the French mezzo-soprano in turn communicated this capacity for wonder in a panorama of melodies inspired by popular songs to composers of the XXe century.

This disc of inexhaustible richness, he is someone on earth (published by the Cyprès label in June 2022), allows us to appreciate the power of incarnation of a lyrical singer who has now reached maturity. She will give an overview of this, as part of the Musiques au pays de Pierre Loti festival – which takes place on the island of Oléron (Charente-Maritime) – during two educational sessions open to the public (Monday 15 and Friday 19 May ) and a concert (Wednesday May 17) with the Ensemble Contraste.

“Classical melodies that have their source in folklore, it’s a bit my “hobby” at the moment”, recognizes the versatile musician who, on June 8 and 9, in Rouen, will provide a new illustration of this in the company of a string quartet. By no means straight in terms of the repertoire, explored according to encounters, the career of Albane Carrère is just as marked by the changes of direction in the biographical field. Born in Vienna while her parents worked at NATO, she grew up in Brussels, did her studies and her first professional steps there, before settling in France in 2010 (young soloist at the Opéra de Rouen), but “Love to return to the ‘flat country’ for the Belgian spirit, the self-mockery”.

An almost mystical experience

Recorder at the European School of Belgium, clarinet, voice work, joining the choirs of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels while playing in a jazz ensemble… Here again, Albane Carrère did not choose the straight line to realize his dream. Moreover, before embarking on the profession, she completed a master’s degree in sociology on the social status of opera singers – and thus became aware of what awaited her. “I thought it was enough to have talent for all the doors to open. I was far from imagining how long and complex the journey is. » An almost mystical experience convinced her that she was on the right track.
