The trial of Zamin Salayev, chairman of the Salyan district organization of the People’s Front Party, began on May 11 in the Garadagh District Court. Salayev has been on hunger strike for 94 days and demands his release. According to PFLP, during the trial, Salayev denied the charge of attacking the victim with a knife and affirmed his innocence. PFLP believes that the accusations against Salayev were fabricated in order to punish him for his opposition activities.
The US Embassy, which closely follows Salayev’s case, called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release him and said that he was detained unjustly. A representative of the US embassy said in a conversation with Turan News Agency: “We are aware of the information that Alizamin Salayev has declared a hunger strike. We continue to follow his work closely.
The United States remains committed to promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. We call on the authorities to take steps to protect the rights of citizens in accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan and its obligations under international agreements.
The US Embassy calls for the release of those unjustly detained. The United States continues to call on the Azerbaijani authorities to release all persons unjustly or arbitrarily detained for exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
