Subdued Beauty: Filming Female Ruthensparr Gobies Underwater with a Homemade Snoot

This lovely lady allows me in as she continues with what she is doing; to eat. Although the males ruthensparr gobies attracting attention all around me with their impressive behavior, I focus on the females this dive. They are calmer and have less striking colors; a more subdued beauty. They also lack the black spot on the side of their heads that the males do have.

Because I sit so shallow, no more than two meters, the sun has a lot of influence on the effect of the film. When the clouds are gone for a while and the sun comes through, the images are immediately overexposed. That’s why I wait every time until I film with my back to the sun again. Then it goes pretty well.

And a very creative underwater photographer gave me a homemade snoot to try out. This is a tube with a narrow opening that reduces the light from the video light. This way I can highlight the fish just a little bit without the image being overexposed. Such a creative exchange between divers gives me another impulse to try something new. That’s nice!

Suddenly I see mama ruthensparr kind of yawning. She runs water through her gills to strain out the plankton. It looks funny. She does it a few more times while I follow her, alternating with small dips in the seaweed for a tasty snack.
