The extraction of fingerlings of cyprinids (tench) from ponds for the restocking of prey; of claria and tilapia biomass for delivery to the industry; and constructive actions on various fronts; mark the working days at the UEB La Paila, belonging to the Flota del Golfo Boat Company (Flogolfo), in Artemisa.

Workers from the unit-second largest fingerling station in the country – located in San Cristóbal, capture cyprinid fingerlings -2.5 million- sown in the first days of April in five ponds, a lower quantity than in the same period of years previous.

“Due to the impact on the hectares dedicated specifically to the tench planting activity, we adopted the variant of using fattening ponds, available at the time. Normally, we carry out four cycles of this type of crop in the year, on other occasions we have planted up to six million in the first one”, explains Tania Rodríguez, director of the UEB.

The rupture of a siphon prevents the passage of water towards said ponds and, consequently, the exploitation of the area specifically designated for this activity. In the next few days, the rehabilitation of the conduit should begin, Rodríguez points out, which requires the intervention of specialized equipment and personnel.

Also at this time they carry out the selective fishing of specimens of claria and tilapia suitable for delivery to the industry, and in the case of tilapia fingerlings, they intend to market them through producers and companies interested in growth.

In La Paila they also work in the production of animal feed alternative to industrial feed in a small factory that consists of a mixer, a hammer mill and a grinder. “Currently we have sweet potatoes and by-products of the fishing industry to process.”

The construction works are aimed at completing a spawning room, a work of considerable magnitude with a delayed schedule due to insufficient resources such as fuel and aggregates; the recovery of ponds in poor condition; and the completion of the offices of the socioeconomic structure.

Finally, the director points out the low levels of capture in the dams, determined to a large extent by the considerable deterioration of the fishing gear, an issue that she hopes can be resolved in the second half of 2023, with the delivery of means of this type by the company.
