The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is known for being the largest trainer of new residents in the country. It is a huge school from which thousands of specialists graduate every year who are eventually distributed throughout the national territory. For proper learning to exist, it is necessary to have health professionals who fulfill the role of teachers.
Just to have an idea, there are more than 12,000 teachers who are in charge of health education processes for the resident training in 70 medical specialties and one stomatology. In addition, they also participate in different careers and technical courses in the health area.
The general director of Social Security, Zoé Robledo, pointed out that currently there are 10,200 teachers in the 35 Decentralized Administrative Operation Bodies (OOAD). In addition, there are also 2,279 in the High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE).
He explained that these more than 12,000 workers support different careers, management functions, promote projects for the benefit of students or the right, and many carry out research.
Research within the IMSS
Zoé Robledo added that in the IMSS there are 40 Research Centers, 19 related to medical research, 8 to epidemiological research and health services, 8 to clinical epidemiology research and 5 Biomedical Research Centers.
Dr. Carolina Consejo y Chapela, Head of the Area of Teacher Training, Research in Education and Humanities in Health, indicated that these personnel, in addition to teaching, carry out activities of prevention and health promotion, medical care, rehabilitation, basic and clinical research, and management in units of the three levels of care.
“This May 15 we want to recognize the effort that is made in our double role as teachers and staff who are in charge of care services, research and even management of health services.”
He highlighted that in eight years, from 2002 to 2010, 2,660 teachers were trained. While in 2022 it was possible to train more than 5 thousand, thanks to the work carried out in the Educational Research and Teacher Training Centers (CIEFD) that the IMSS has in various parts of the country, dedicated to the permanent education of teachers in charge of health education processes in Social Security.
He explained that in 2023 there is a portfolio of 475 courses that respond to the various training needs of teachers.
He said that in the portal There is a section dedicated to teachers, where you will find all the information on the Centers for Educational Research and Teacher Training, as well as the annual portfolio of courses.
Dr. Consejo y Chapela pointed out that the courses can be online, face-to-face at the 11 CIEFD or mixed. They are aimed at developing transversal skills focused on quality health education processes, developing an Institutional Teaching Career and becoming academics within the Institute.
“Their work is fundamental, because through the educational processes a reorientation of the course can be provided, in favor of the improvement of the care processes. Therefore, our teachers and our teachers are agents of change”.
Training of new residents in the IMSS
For her part, Dr. Norma Claudia Necoechea Silva, Head of the Graduate Educational Programs Area in the Human Resources for Health Training Division, indicated that Social Security has 70 medical specialties and one stomatology specialty, all specialties They are developed in the different environments that the Institute offers, ranging from medical care, surgical and administrative care.
He highlighted that when a resident doctor is in his last year of training, he carries out a field rotation in the IMSS Bienestar Hospitals to put into practice the specific skills of the specialty, acquired during the previous years under the tutelage of his professors in its academic headquarters.
