The Platform for People Affected by the Mortgage (PAH) has launched this Monday a message to people who are at risk of losing their home due to non-payment: “You are not alone”, after learning about the case of a 56-year-old woman, Melanie, whose death is being investigated as a suicide before being evicted in Barcelona.
Melanie had been living in the apartment in the center of Barcelona for 3 or 4 years, for which he could no longer pay the rent when he lost his job and to be going through a bad personal moment, as explained today by the PAH in a statement.
The foundation that owns the flat had filed a lawsuit to evict this woman and on the day of the eviction, the members of the judicial committee that entered the apartment found her lifeless body.
Melanie was not a user of social servicesalthough she was offered help from the Barcelona City Council but she rejected it.
“We can’t stop imagining what would have happened if Melanie had gone to any of the assemblies of the different organizations of the movement for housing: perhaps she would have seen that she was not alone”, finding herself in a space “in which to banish the shame that accompanies the -supposed- failure of losing work and home”, they have considered from the PAH.
If this woman is confirmed to have taken her own life, the PAH has blamed the administrationwho “has had our proposals on the table for years: prohibiting evictions without alternativeincrease the public housing stock, invest resources in social services and proactive and personalized care for those affected, among others”.

“It is a matter of political will“, they have affirmed from the movement for housing, which has recalled that “a Spanish Housing Law has been approved without paying attention to the UN or the PAH and that it does not prohibit evictions without a housing alternative”.
For this reason, the PAH makes a appeal to all people who suffer or are at risk of losing their home and assures them that “they are not alone” and also asks them not to hesitate to go to the assemblies to seek help and accompaniment.
