En 1977, Marie Myriam won Eurovision with her song “L’oiseau et l’enfant”. Saturday May 13, the artist, now 66 years old, was in front of her television to support La Zarra, the Quebec singer who represented France for the 2023 edition of the famous song contest. An edition placed under the sign of homage to Ukraine, the last winner. But during the announcement of the results and the victory of Sweden’s Loreen, La Zarra made a gesture in front of the cameras resembling a middle finger that shocked her eldest.

If the young artist defended herself, claiming to have simply expressed her disappointment, Marie Myriam refuses to be fooled. “Watch the video, it’s a middle finger! And it was seen by nearly 200 million viewers. What a shame ! “, she is indignant with the Parisian.

“I find it glamorous”

“There was a special atmosphere, charged with emotion, because the show should not have taken place in Liverpool, but in Ukraine, which won last year,” recalls Marie Myriam. “So this gesture of La Zarra at the end of the evening because she did not win, it is really shocking”, she judges, adding: “She made this gesture sitting in an armchair with French flags behind her. France does not deserve this! »

The former Eurovision winner was all the more shocked after she had given her support to La Zarra on Facebook. “I find it glamorous. I really like how she is dressed, her costumes. Her diva side didn’t bother me, it’s part of the character, ”she says.

But Marie Myriam has a hard time understanding such a bad player gesture. “Perhaps we should have explained to her that she wasn’t sure she would come first. This is the principle of a contest. If we don’t want to lose, we don’t participate! »
