From the Rhaetian Railway’s Ilanz station, the PostBus takes you to Vrin at 1,447 meters above sea level, where the hike can begin. Through the villages of Cons and S. Giusep, the route initially takes you on a road that is hardly used, then on gravel roads and paths over Alp Diesrut (1945 metres) beyond the tree line and over green alpine pastures to the entrance gate to the Greina plateau, the 2428 meter high pass Diesrut (5h).

200 meters further down, a wide, barren high valley opens up, to which there are a total of five entrances, exclusively for hikers. The river Rein da Sumvitg, which later flows into the Vorderrhein, meanders through the one kilometer wide plain. Except for some paths and signs, there are no traces of people here.

Because of the originality and uniqueness of the landscape, the six-kilometer-long valley was included in the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance in Switzerland in 1996.

Danger for the Greina

The Greina only became a protection zone after storms of protest from several environmental protection associations. The plan to flood the Greina plain and turn it into a reservoir lasted for decades. In 1991 the construction of an 80 meter high dam was to begin. First local and later nationwide resistance led to a rethink and compensation payments for the communities that would have benefited from the generation of electricity.

When the snow has melted on the plateau in July, the hikers come, especially on weekends, and cross the valley to the Passo della Greina, the Passo Crap in Romansch, or to the Crap la Crusch, both of which are also the borders with the canton of Ticino. There are five huts in the vicinity that can serve as locations.

The multi-day suggested route with approximate times in the photo gallery leads from Greina to Lago di Luzzone, through the Val di Carassino and over the Passo del Laghetto to Malvaglia in Ticino.
