The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission has ordered the police to pay 75 lakh rupees at the rate of 5 lakh rupees each to a total of 15 people, including six women, who have been sexually abused and abused by police officers.
Kasi, a member of the Irular community from D. Mandapam village next to Tirukovilur in Villupuram district, was taken to the Tirukovilur police station in November 2011. A total of 14 people, including his wife Lakshmi, father-in-law Kumar, sisters Radhika and Vaitheeswari, minor brothers Padiyappa and Manikkam were taken to the police station at 8 pm that day.
Four of the women were allegedly taken to a forest in Thilapuram and sexually abused by the police. Lakshmi, one of the victims, lodged a complaint with the Villupuram Additional SP seeking action against Tirukovilur police station inspector Srinivasan, special assistant inspector Ramanathan, Ettu Dhanasekaran, policemen Bhagwatsalam and Karthikeyan for the crimes.
Based on a newspaper report, the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission came forward and took up the case. Commission member Durai Jayachandran, who investigated the case, alleged that six women were detained by the police for violating an order not to keep women in the police station at night; He has now been ordered to pay Rs 75 lakh as compensation at the rate of Rs 5 lakh each to the 15 victims, claiming that the assault on the men at the police station has also been proven.
Further, the commission directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to issue an order within three months of the departmental action against the police officers involved in the incident and also directed them to register against the police and file a speedy chargesheet in the case which has been pending for the last 10 years.
