The intervention of Athens was caused by the publication of an electoral map of Turkey, in the English-language edition of the French newspaper Le Monde on the Internet, which depicted the results of the elections in Turkish territory, including Greek islands.

As diplomatic sources point out, following relevant instructions from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, the Ambassador of Greece to France, Dimitrios Zevelakis, sent a letter to the newspaper.

In it, according to the same sources, he pointed out the wrong practice of republishing a map which depicts the results of the elections in Turkish territory including Greek islands.

In addition, as it is emphasized, “he requested the immediate deletion of the map and the avoidance of its reproduction by the English and French electronic edition of the newspaper, in order to restore the correctness and accuracy of the information published, as well as to avoid causing confusion to the reading public”.

Le Monde, the same sources conclude, has already deleted the particular map from its website.
