The Vatican Post Office and the Vatican Philatelic Office issued this Tuesday, May 16, the stamp for World Youth Day 2023, which will be held in Lisbon from August 1 to 6.
In addition to the stamp, the Vatican will also issue a postmark on the day of release for this XXXVII World Youth Day.
In the image you can see how Pope Francis guides a group of young people of different nationalities from the prow of “Peter’s boat”. One of them is kneeling in prayer and one of the girls waves a Portuguese flag.
This image has been designed by the artist Stefano Morri, who was inspired by the so-called “Monument to the Discoveries”, which is located in the city that will host the event.
This monument was built in 1960 in honor of Enrique de Portugal, called “the Navigator”, who marked the beginning of the era of Portuguese discoveries in various territories.
In the upper left part of the seal you can also see, the logo of the meeting, based on the theme chosen by Pope Francis: “Mary got up and left without delay”
The winner of the contest and author of the logo, the Portuguese Beatriz Roque Antunez, stated that “as the passage that is the theme of WYD in Lisbon 2023 tells us, Maria does not sit still and go visit her cousin.”
“That is the invitation to young people: not to sit around, make it happen, build and not leave the fate of the world in the hands of others. We all need young people to take the world in their hands, ”he noted.
For its part, the Vatican Post Office has also issued other commemorative stamps on Tuesday. One of them shows the moment in which the Holy Father showed the flag of the Ukrainian city of Bucha during the General Audience of 2022.
The Pontiff made this gesture after Russian soldiers left numerous lifeless bodies in the streets of Bucha, a city near kyiv.
“Yesterday from Bucha they brought me this flag,” Pope Francis said before standing up to hold the weathered Ukrainian flag with a cross in the center.
