The University of California is currently studying how well a flock of sheep performs in grass care compared to regular lawn mowers.

First insights: 1. Sheep fertilize the lawn while mowing. 2. Your presence has a positive impact on the well-being of those around you. At this point, a noisy petrol mower certainly cannot keep up.

Here experts explain how non-sheep farmers can trim their lawns. Do you prefer the classic petrol mower, a manual mower operated by muscle power, an electric mower or the lazy solution, the robotic lawnmower?

“The selection of the type of mower has more to do with the comfort for the lawn owner,” explains Harald Nonn (65), Chairman of the German Lawn Society (DRG). “The hand lawn mower requires more sporting commitment, the electric lawn mower makes work easier and is relatively quiet. In battery mode, no cable gets in the way either. The petrol lawn mower is more for larger areas, especially when there is no power supply. Robotic lawnmowers constantly keep the lawn short, there is no need to remove the cuttings and the lawn owner can watch the work,” explains the expert.

However, Silvia Teich (53) from the German Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) advises against mowing robots: “The constant mowing keeps the lawn so short that it no longer offers a habitat for small animals. The devices also endanger useful garden dwellers such as hedgehogs, common frogs and common toads, who can be injured by the sharp blades.” For them, the hand lawn mower is the best alternative.

Lawn expert Nonn points out what is technically important for all mowers. “Sharp knives so that the grass can be cut off cleanly.” This keeps the cutting area small and heals quickly. “Otherwise, pathogens can get in and a lot of water is lost through the wound.”
