RTE, the electricity network manager, is concerned about France’s ability to meet its commitments.

Will France be able to keep its commitments in offshore wind power by 2030? Nothing is less certain according to Régis Boigegrain, executive director of interconnections and offshore network of the French electricity network operator (RTE). The ambitions are there, but the execution is failing, due to procedures that are still too complex.

In 2030, France should have 7,000 to 8,000 megawatts (i.e. 7 GW to 8 GW) of installed production capacity for offshore wind power, with the aim of reaching 40 GW in 2050. That is the equivalent of the production of 25 latest-generation nuclear reactors. Today, France only has 480 MW.
