We all have a memory associated with the famous Méhari car: a policeman in Saint-Tropez, John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Cannes or, more prosaically, walks by the sea, hair in the wind, music blasting. Christophe Labaeye is reviving this flame in Gouesnac’h (Finistère), where he created the Breizh Méhari company, the sole distributor in Brittany of this mythical car which is reborn as 100% electric.

“I have been passionate about the Méhari since my childhood,” says Christophe. When I was young, during the weekends, we drove around in an orange Méhari that my family owned. I’ve always dreamed of having one but it didn’t fit into my budget. A year ago, following a report, he discovered that an Ardèche company, MLT Automotive, based in Pouzin (Ardèche), was manufacturing an electric version, the “E-Story”, of the famous model designed in 1968 by Citroën. A real click.

Big downside: impossible (at the time) to try one in Brittany. This consultant in business advice does not give up and then proposes to distribute them in Brittany, associated with Jérémy Pereira, mechanic in Concarneau, and Alain Cachia. “To be honest, he admits, I don’t know much about mechanics but Jérémy is there to remedy that. »

As soon as the news spread in the world of Méhari enthusiasts, Christophe Labaeye began to travel the roads of Brittany aboard his Méhari “E-Story”. It must be said that this version, identical to the original, has everything to please. With a range of 150 km, it consumes €1.50 of electricity per kilometre. It can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h. And it takes 6 hours to recharge it on a conventional outlet.

“We offer ourselves the myth but in an ecological way, argues Christophe Labaeye. And, icing on the cake, the car is available in several colors, including a white with a very Breizh blue hood. In addition, in summer, you can take everything off to be more fun: doors and hood! »

The islanders immediately adopted this means of transport. “I have been emulated on Belle-Île and Groix. As she drives from the age of 16, with a B1 license, a father bought it for his son. It’s funny because he arrived on a scooter to buy it,” says Christophe. The reputation of the electric Méhari has even crossed the Atlantic and won over a Bénodet resident living in the United States!

For the moment, Christophe Labaeye only offers the sale of Méhari. But, soon, it will set up a daily rental system in southern Finistère. A performance that will surely delight enthusiasts of this atypical car.
