In addition, the president convened the National Electoral Council to organize new general elections in seven days. Elections for deputies were scheduled to take place only in 2025.

The process of impeachment against Lasso was initiated due to accusations of favoring an oil company in state contracts. On Tuesday the 16th, the president of Ecuador appeared before the National Assembly to present his defense, and the vote was scheduled for next Saturday the 20th.

Impeachment

The trial of Guillermo Lasso, accused of embezzlement in the company’s management state of Flopec navigation, began on Tuesday the 16th, at the National Congress of Ecuador.

The complaints claim that Lasso maintained a contract with the state-owned company, before assuming the Presidency, resulting in losses of more than US$ 6 million.

Present at the trial, Lasso pleaded his innocence, arguing that there is no relevant evidence or testimony. He also mentioned the accusers who, according to him, “sought to seize power on several occasions” during his rule.

The process of impeachment started a week ago, with broad support from several parties, including that of former President Rafael Correa, leader of the opposition to the current government and sentenced to eight years in prison, who lives in Europe.
