Archeology continues to be one of the sciences that most favor the Judeo-Christian faith, in view of the large and continuous number of discoveries that reinforce the reliability of the accounts of the Holy Bible, such as the most recent one made by archaeologists in the Negev desert.
Negev is a desert located in Israel, where the discovery of 16 grape seeds of various species was announced on the last day of the 4th. Of these, DNA tests have revealed that two date back to 900 BC.
The statement was made by the paleogenetic laboratory of the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History at the University of Tel Aviv and by the University of Haifa, according to information from the magazine Galileo.
Recorded in the Bible
Archaeologists believe that the seeds found are part of a species recorded by the Bible, in the passage of Genesis 49:11, when the patriarch Jacob gave his blessing to his son:
“He will tie his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his garments in the blood of grapes,” says the sacred text.
It is also believed that the same species was mentioned in Numbers 13:23, where it is written that “when they arrived in the Valley of Eshkol (identified by some as Nahal Sorek), they cut a branch with a single bunch of grapes. Two of them carried him on a pole between them.”
Leading the excavations, Professor Guy Bar-Oz also believes the discovery confirms the existence of a large winery in the region during the Byzantine period. With the advance of Muslim domination, cultivation ended, only resuming in the second half of the last century.
“The cultivation of wine grapes in the Negev has only been renewed in modern times, in the state of Israel, mainly since the 1980s,” explains the professor. “That industry, however, relies mainly on grape varieties imported from Europe.”
