Former professional soccer player Martin Hinteregger will take over the position of player-coach at his home club in Carinthia for the coming season.

The former Austrian national soccer player Martin Hinteregger (30) takes over his home club SGA Sirnitz (Carinthia) as player-coach for the new season.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt defender already plays there as a striker and leads the top scorers list in the fifth-tier Unterliga Ost with 21 goals. “Our coach Florian Oberrisser is going to be a dad and wants to step down. I’m looking forward to the new task,” Hinteregger is quoted as saying by the “Kronen-Zeitung”.

Hinteregger had ended his professional career at Eintracht Frankfurt last year at the age of 29, after winning the Europa League with the Hessians shortly before. Together with Eintracht’s ex-striker Alex Meier, who is currently coaching Frankfurt’s U16s, he could also imagine a coaching job in professional football, Hinteregger said in an interview with “Sport Bild”. “I still have a lot of contact with him, and I’m sure I’ll sit in on his training soon.”

At the beginning of the year, the former central defender initially ruled out a return to professional football. “In professional football I meet people again who don’t want the best in you,” Hinteregger explained at the time. “And I can’t imagine working as a coach.” (dpa)
